Last week, The Saddleback Mission Viejo Elks Lodge #2444 had the privilege of hearing the story of Corporal Desmond Doss from his son, Desmond Doss Jr and Chaplain Roger Rustad. After showing the award winning movie, Hacksaw Ridge (the true story of Desmond Doss) the many attendees heard stories from Doss, Jr and the Chaplain about Corporal Doss and how he saved so many lives in combat all the while remaining a conscientious objector.
Of the 16 million men in uniform during World War 2, only 431 received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Nations highest award for bravery and courage under fire. Corporal Doss received his medal from President Truman in 1945 after only 3 years of service. The presentation was brought to life with the displays of Corporal Doss' uniform, Medal of Honor, Bible and assorted memorabilia. Attendees enjoyed refreshments after the lively interactive portion of the presentation, as well as meeting the presenters.

The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating over 50 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities.
